Washing Powder, Cloths & Cottage Pie
After reading this month's issue of Warm Earth magazine (http://www.warmearth.com.au/) online I was keen to make my own washing powder. The recipe was contributed by Rhonda Jean (http://down---to---earth.blogspot.com):
4 cups grated laundry or homemade soap or soap flakes (Lux) 2 cups borax 2 cups washing soda. Mix all the ingredients together and use two tablespoons per wash. I did a costing (see below, using full priced items) and it works out at only 21cents per wash, which is a lot cheaper than buying washing powder from the store. Washing Soda 1/2 pack = $1-94, Borax X1 tub = $3-99, Lux flakes @ 69cents per cup = $2-76. That's a total of $8.69 which I worked out will give you 41 washes. I did a load of washing this morning using the powder and my clothes are impressingly clean :) I also hauled out the overlocker and whipped up a dozen or so cleaning cloths as mine were looking pretty torn and old. I'd been stockpiling the towelling in the cupboard, so it was nice to use a little of it because farout towelling is bulky and space wasting! Tonight's meal is cottage pie. I don't know about everyone else, but come winter time I'm usually feeling pretty tired by the time dinner comes around and the last thing I want to do is cook and clean up. What I try and do is pre plan all our meals for the week, as I find having a visual on the fridge saves me time thinking a million times through the day - what on earth can I cook tonight? It just makes things easier for me. What I also try and do is ensure the menu contains one or two (sometimes three) meals that can be cooked through the day when I'm still feeling fresh and just reheated at night. This cuts down considerably on mucking around in the kitchen when all I want to do is sit down, help with homework, do home reader with Bella or just relax. I'll pop the recipe in my recipe blog (link on the left in my sidebar) later today just incase you'd like to make it - it's very yummy :) By the way - the first felt food tutorial should be up tomorrow :)

James went to a friend's house this afternoon for a sleep over, so Bella and I decided to do some cooking to pop in the freezer ready for school lunches. I don't believe in putting lollies and chips in the kids lunches but I do like them to have a little piece of home cooked slice, cake or muffin popped in there when I can manage it.
