Visiting my Dad on the weekends when I was little usually meant one thing - a long Sunday drive. This would entail a trip out the bush along a dirt road, driving at a snail's pace while Dad would comment on the trees, rain fall, cows (oh, yes), current road condition and all those unexciting things while I was strapped in my seat wondering when we might be able to get back home and put a stop to the most boring day of my life. Oh, the agony of it!
But, times have changed! I'm all grown up now and the prospect of a Sunday drive with the family to discover new places (and old) seems quite appealing. I giggle quietly on the inside now when Rich or I suggest heading out on a day trip and James or Bella ask why in that I so don't want to do this tone. Of course depending on the destination and what's on their social agenda that weekend, they're sometimes actually excited about the outing. We usually take along a picnic or treat ourselves to hot chocolate and a warm lunch while we're out and about, take photos, look longingly in antique stores and then head home, too tired to be bothered cooking dinner that night - toasted sandwiches are always good at the end of a long day.
Today I headed out for the morning and afternoon on my own mini road trip, heading down to the Huon Valley to see my most favourite hairdresser in the world. It was raining, cold and dreary, but I had my radio on to keep me company in the car and my best singing voice - okay, okay, I don't have the world's most wonderful voice, but it doesn't matter when you're driving by yourself.
I stopped for apples on the way home and bought Friday treats for James and Bella from an old fashioned sweet store that sold the most wicked chocolate covered jelly babies.
It was a good day and nice to have my very own me time.
I think it's important to make time for yourself. I'd love to know what you do for 'me' time? Does it ever include venturing out on a private road trip?
